Learn how to structure a venture with business model innovation
Structuring for Success is a truly transdisciplinary, industry-focused unit, that will help you reimagine the world around you and guide you from drawing board to launch pad in just six weeks.
You'll gain the skillset and the mindset you need to make your next big move - whatever that might be.
Students will take an experiential journey through business model analysis and innovation but make no mistake, Structuring is not just for business students. We'll look at social innovation and impact, meet entrepreneurs from a diverse range of fields and help you explore your niche - whether you're a hacker, hipster or a hustler.
You'll work alongside amazing students and educators from around NSW, get expert mentoring and pitch your idea to real investors, gaining practical experience on how to structure a new business to capture maximum value.
Structuring is for you if:
- You want to know what it actually takes to start a business from scratch or create a sustainable social venture
- You're keen to meet like-minded students from different disciplines and institutions across NSW
- You want a flexible learning experience to fit around your schedule
- You're currently studying at any of our 12 education partners (11 NSW universities and TAFE NSW).

Our units are dynamic, collaborative and real-world focused – no lectures, no assignments that make you ask "why am I doing this?", no readings from some 18th-century scholar you've never heard of. We believe in making opportunity accessible so SSE charges no fees for this unit.
Studying at SSE opens doors. As an alumni, you will become a lifetime member of the diverse SSE community. You'll make unlikely friendships, get direct access to our Brains Trust and have a network of like-minded students from institutions from across NSW to collaborate with.
We've got you covered at SSE. Learning support is on hand as you work through the units online. You'll get timely feedback and run through assignments that make sense. And there will be more than a few surprises along the way.
The nitty gritty
This unit helps you to achieve the following SSE Graduate Capabilities (GC):
- Interdisciplinary teamwork:
Collaborative and reflective contributions to interdisciplinary teamwork in ways that advance the work of your team, facilitate the contribution of others, foster a constructive team environment and respond effectively to conflict that arises
- Entrepreneurship knowledge and skills:
Knowledge and skills in relation to entrepreneurship (i.e . presenting, interviewing, pitching, )
- Critical thinking:
Critical and creative thinking in relation to how value is created and captured
- Communication skills:
Effective interpersonal and communication skills, empathy and succinct visual, oral, written and digital presentation skills with diverse stakeholders about entrepreneurial opportunities
- Wider community considerations:
Integration of ethical, social, political and environmental responsibilities when considering entrepreneurial initiatives
- Strategic thinking and decision-making: Strategic solutions within an entrepreneurial context.
This unit is not currently available for credit and is considered as a co-curricular activity.
All students who complete Structuring for Success will receive a certificate of completion and can add the achievement to your resume or LinkedIn profile.
Who can apply?
No matter what you’re studying or where you live, if you are a student currently enrolled at an SSE member institution, you are eligible to apply*.
SSE members are Australian Catholic University, Charles Sturt University, Macquarie University, Southern Cross University, TAFE NSW, The University of Newcastle, The University of Sydney, University of New England, University of Technology Sydney, University of Wollongong, UNSW Sydney and Western Sydney University.
*TAFE NSW International Students are not currently eligible for this unit. We are working on a solution and will update this page when further information is available.
