This month we sit down with Adam Pickstone, founder of Pixflix Productions, a full-service videography and photography production and post-production agency in Sydney, to gain some insights into the life of small business ownership.
Pixflix Productions specialises in online media, brand videos, and business photography for the corporate sector by creating unique visual content for real estate, retail, finance, construction, hospitality, events, and health and wellbeing brands.
“We’re a team of Sydney visual content professionals, videographers, and photographers who are as passionate about your brand as you are,” says Adam.
What made you want to start a business?
I started my business over seven years ago, to be able to do what I loved to do anyway.
In the last two years this has shifted from simply ‘doing what I love’ to really focusing on what it takes to help business and brands get their message across to their audiences.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received, personally or professionally?
Keep on learning. It doesn’t matter how much you know already, there is still so much more to learn about business and life.
What’s been your most significant lesson in business?
The biggest lesson I have learned is how important it is to continue to invest in yourself and your business. If you get complacent, you’ll stop growing.
During your startup phase what was your biggest obstacle?
To be honest it was ‘How do I get leads?’, then from there it was ‘How do I actually do this business thing?!’
Over the years you learn from trial and error, and of course from experience, but it is hard. When I first launched my business, I didn’t know anyone that had their own business so sometimes I felt like a deer in the headlights.
What do you like to do to unwind after a long day?
Watch movies or TV shows with my wife and spend time with my kids.
As a business owner, what keeps you motivated?
I am extremely passionate about what Pixflix does and how it helps people and other businesses reflect and build their brands, but also how it benefits my family and lifestyle. I couldn’t imagine working for anyone else again.
What advice would you give to someone who isn’t sure about starting a small business?
You never know if you never try. Having an idea is great but it is that leap into the unknown that is scary but ultimately where the growth and success lies. If you believe in your idea and it is a good one, then what’s the harm [in trying]?
