Professor John Germov is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Higher Education) at Victoria University. He is also a member of SSE's Academic Committee.

Prior to his appointment at Victoria University, John was the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Charles Sturt University (CSU) and previously the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Education and Arts at the University of Newcastle (UON). 

John is a sociologist with research interests spanning the social determinants of health, with a particular focus on food and alcohol consumption in the context of public health. He has published 24 books to-date and numerous book chapters and articles.

John has built a significant national and international sector profile through his terms as President of the Australasian Council of Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (DASSH), President of The Australian Sociological Association (TASA), as well as his service on the Executive of the International Sociological Association (ISA). In 2010, he received the Outstanding Service to The Australian Sociological Association Award.

John’s leadership career is characterised by several themes: student and partner centred education innovation, institutional culture change to improve performance, and collaborative and inclusive evidenced based decision-making. He is a passionate advocate for the transformational impact of university education, especially its role in transforming regions, widening participation, and creating an informed citizenry with a cosmopolitan outlook.
