Imagination meets innovation: Discovery in action in two Sydney schools

Written by Admin | 18 May 2023

The Sydney School of Entrepreneurship (SSE) recently partnered with two more Sydney high schools to introduce students to the world of innovation and entrepreneurship via its popular Discovery program.

Approximately 20 participating Year 9 and 10 students from St Joseph’s College and 70 Year 9 students from International Grammar School (IGS) in Sydney’s inner city kicked their Discovery programs off in April 2023 with a fun day-long excursion to SSE’s campus in Ultimo, in the heart of Sydney’s Tech Central district.

Over the course of the program’s six core modules, participating students will learn how to apply entrepreneurial mindsets to identify and develop solutions to real-world problems, collaborating via team-based project work to compose and ultimately pitch their solutions and business models and a panel of industry experts.

Discovery is a versatile program with customisable delivery timeframes; for example, IGS is delivering the program as co-curricular and concentrating all program modules into a single school term, whereas St Joseph’s College is running it as an extra-curricular activity over two school terms. Delivery can also be blended (in-person and online) or fully online.

Throughout, facilitators will provide students with expert feedback and mentorship through 1-on-1 and team virtual mentoring sessions, which are a terrific opportunity for students to access expert feedback and guidance while the program is in-flight. The remainder of the program is delivered via SSE’s best-in-class Learning Management System, SSEQuad.

“Students have already submitted lots of creative ideas and innovative solutions for sustainable services, Apps to support everyday conveniences, and unique products and fashion items that respond to the young adult market,” says Jayde Cahir, SSE Training Facilitator.

“These ideas are typical of the innovative design thinking that comes so naturally to teenagers when they are given an opportunity to develop and showcase their own ideas and solutions, which is ultimately what makes Discovery such a unique and wonderful experience.”

SSE will look forward to hosting both schools for their final excursions for the program, where students will get to experience the excitement of pitching their innovative ideas to the expert panel, later this year.
