Invest in Yourself: Exploring Money and Self-Employment

Invest in Yourself: Exploring Money and Self-Employment brings together financial literacy and entrepreneurship for a diverse range of learners. It is a fast-paced, activity-based learning environment that engages learners through collaborative and creative group-based exercises.

Becoming financially independent starts with investing in yourself.

In this workshop, participants increase their confidence and knowledge of financial literacy, including fundamentals such as budgeting and goal setting, tax, credit and superannuation. 

Participants identify their own skills and strengths and explore how to grow these into a successful side business. This program also encompasses methods to create small businesses addressing opportunities in their community.

 

 
Learning Outcomes

Through the program, participants will:

  • Evaluate the impacts of good money management, including personal financial habits and goal setting.
  • Identify and define the characteristics of different forms of employment, including remote and self-employment.
  • Understand the basic components of the Australian financial system and the functions of tax, credit and superannuation and assess the impact of these on students' own financial circumstances.
  • Identify personal strengths and apply practical techniques to create opportunities for self-employment, and remote work.
  • Identify and reframe community issues from a social impact perspective to define as business opportunities. 
Program Detail

Invest In Yourself: Exploring Money and Self-Employment brings together financial literacy and entrepreneurship for participants through fun group-based workshop activities. It is an SSE-led and facilitated program with a customisable delivery model that can be integrated into youth programs and school curriculum. Supported by a Learning Management System, SSE's facilitators provide support and individualised feedback to ensure a quality experience for participants.

Modules at a Glance

There are six modules in the Invest In Yourself program. Participants complete these modules in class and through SSE's Learning Management ‘SSEQuad' and are supported through 1:1 coaching sessions.

Each of the modules is designed to contribute to the skills growth journey of the participants.

Introduction

Particpants spend time reflecting on where they are at with the concepts of money and financial literacy.

Exploring Money

Participants learn how they view money and how that affects their financial goals. They will learn about the different sources of income, how to set a budget.

Tax, Credit and Super

Participants gain fundamental knowledge of the Australian tax system, as well as credit and superannuation to help them master their finances.

Making Money

Participants look at past, current and future ways to earn an income, including freelancing and what entrepreneurial skills will be relevant for future employment.

Identifying Strengths and Opportunities

Participants learn to know their strengths and skills and how they might be able to use these to generate their own income through self-employment.

Have a Go!

Participants learn how to present their ideas to a group, understanding the basics of pitching and presentation. Further support is offered in an online module which support students with the professional skills required develop their own business idea.

 

 

Facilitator and Mentor

The program is designed and taught by a range of expert practitioners. Our team employs the latest in entrepreneurial learning techniques to deliver impactful outcomes and support participant success. Each program works with a valued member of community who is trained as a Cultural Mentor to co-design and co-facilitate the program to ensure the learning is delivered in a culturally safe way.

Kayleb Waters-Sampson
Founder of Ngurrambaa

Kayleb Waters-Sampson, a Gomeroi Man from Walhallow (Caroona Mission) was a mentor for our Gomeroi Culture Academy program delivery. Kayleb is an artist and performer based in Tamworth, where he's a member of the Gomeroi Dance Company, and a Cultural Mentor for the Gomeroi Culture Academy. He delivers cultural content across NSW, including well-being programs, mentoring, and traditional art, dance, and artefact workshops.


Program Completion

Our experiential learning tasks are designed to complement and reinforce participant learning. Participants will complete short quizzes and reflections throughout the program and participate in project work to put their learning into action.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will achieve a digital badge outlining the skills learned, and which you can include in your resume and LinkedIn Profile.
