Fast Five with Director, Brand, Marketing, Communications Nicole Swanson

How did you hear about SSE? What attracted you to the Director, Marketing, Brand and Communications role?
I am passionate about education and have worked in various roles in the education sector throughout my career, so when I saw this role, I was intrigued but also a little intimidated. The concept of entrepreneurship is not something I fully understood, but I soon realised that many of the skills I already possess, such as creativity, innovative thinking, problem-solving and adaptability, are perfectly aligned with what SSE is all about. All the exciting things SSE is doing are also what excited me and drew me to this role.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received, personally or professionally?
When I was quite young, my mum told me that I could do whatever I wanted in my life. At the time I mistook this for thinking I could get a pet elephant and was quite indignant to learn I could not. She has always encouraged and supported me through every crazy creative phase I have been through, and this has given me the courage to be confident in myself even if I am not following the crowd. I am lucky that my mum is still cheering me on in everything I do.

What do you think are the most needed skills and capabilities at the moment?
Resilience and adaptability are key in an ever-changing world. The last few years have shown us that you never know what is around the corner, and the ability to cope and thrive in uncertainty is so important.

What do you do to unwind after a long day?
I love spending time having discussions with my family around the dinner table. With two teenagers in the house, it's an excellent opportunity to hear their thoughts about topics and challenge them to be critical thinkers. They are on the cusp of becoming adults and becoming more sophisticated in their arguments daily.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?
Invisibility. To be able to be a fly on the wall is something I would love to be able to do. To listen to what people have to say when no-one is listening would be very insightful.
